SEDATION AND GENERAL ANESTHESIA

Sedation and General Anesthesia
Pediatric dentists try to cooperate with children using different techniques that are not conformable with treatment. But sometimes children reject treatment due to their fear. For a single child this can vary from session to session, and sometimes the child can never cooperate with treatment.

The treatment of children that does not conform to treatment or cannot conform due to their medical condition, can be done with collaboration of pediatric dentist and anesthesia expert doctor of medicine under sedation or general anesthesia. It’s a supporting method applied by anesthesia doctor that calms down the patient to achieve patient comfort and increased toleration of the process. For patients that require complex treatment for high number of their teeth, the teeth treatment has to be applied in a fully equipped hospital under general anesthesia. Sedation cannot be applied to every child, for this preliminary interview has to be done among a competent anesthesia expert and mom/dad before this process is applied to the patient.

If the patient is suited for sedation a sedation date is determined, in that date the child must not have any diseases such as upper respiratory tract. Before child sedation process is applied its required to stop food and liquid consumption (including water) 8 hours before the operation. Teeth treatment that are done under sedation or general anesthesia can be a savior for teeth treatments to be done for patients that does not conform to treatment due to excessive fear and anxiety or cannot conform due to their medical situation. This process is not just applied to children but it can also be applied to adults with excessive fear of dentists or nausea reflex.
